How to write a report?
First of all, what is a report? A
report is a formal text that provides you information about something in specific.
These are the steps to write a fantastic report!
1) Look for information.
2) Brainstorming and outline.
3) Write your report: Title, Introduction, Body and Conclusion.
4) Review your report before submitting it.
1) Look for information:
Do some research in the library, on internet, and even
at home! Take notes about what you have found and gather all information
related to your topic.
2) Brainstorming and outline:
After you have gathered all the information you found,
you have to ask yourself “what is the main idea of my report?” Write down your
ideas in your notebook, as well as how you are going to organize your report.
This sandwich organizer may also help you to outline
your report!
3) Write your report: Title, Introduction, Body and Conclusion:
Title:
Use a simple title that clearly tells the reader what
your report is about.
Introduction:
The first sentence after the title will introduce the
topic with a fact. This is usually a summary of what the report will be about.
Body:
The body of a report is made out of paragraphs. Paragraphs help to organise your writing into key points. The first
sentence will usually be a summary of the paragraph. The rest of the paragraph
will then go on to give you facts and information about the subject.
Conclusion:
This last paragraph summarizes your report. Do not include any new information here!

4) Review your report before submitting it:
The final step is to edit and revise.
Check for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. You may point
out awkward sentences or suggest ways that they could be clearer or add
details.
- Save your document often! Frequent file saving could save you a lot of trouble.
- Make sure that your facts are relevant and useful.
- Make sure that your writing is clear and doesn't confuse the reader with unnecessary information or opinions.
- Re-read your report once you have finished to be sure everything is in order.

Genres
When you go to the Junior Library, you will see that there are many different types of books. First of all, you can differentiate between fictional and non-fictional books (also called fiction and non-fiction).

Fiction includes every type of story that is not true and made-up (= invented). It was created by the author to entertain the reader. An example would be the Harry Potter books.

Non-fiction includes the books or texts that only give us facts and real information. It wants to inform the reader and is a good source if you want to investigate about a certain topic. In the library you can usually find all the non-fictional books under the specific topic they are about. An example of a non-fictional book would be a book about tornadoes.
However, not every fictional book has got the same characteristics or style. We can also distinguish between different genres. In this Unit we will learn more about the differences between Science Fiction, Mystery and Fantasy.
Science Fiction: Science Fictions stories are often set in the future and deal with science and technology. It is not totally unbelievable, because Science Fiction often includes principles of Science, for example, forces like gravity. Science Fiction stories can also be set in space or on a different world.
Mystery: A Mystery is a type of story
that includes a problem or puzzle. For example, something can be missing or
there is a secret or even a crime - whatever it is, the characters in the book
have to solve it! Most of the time the reader doesn't know the answer to the
problem either. This means, that there is a lot of suspense in a Mystery story.
One of the most famous Mystery stories are the "The Adventures of Sherlock
Holmes".
Fantasy: Fantasy stories
contain elements that are not realistic. For example, they can involve magic,
supernatural events or mythical beings like dragons, werewolves or unicorns.
Often the story deals with the battle between good and evil. Two of the most
famous Fantasy stories are Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings.

Story writing tips
Visual
texts are often presented as a mixture between words and images and can include
anything from diagrams to maps to posters. Other examples are: Movies, computer
games, drawings, book covers and comics.
In
a visual text we can identify different parts:
·
Logos: a type of symbol, for example of a company.
·
Font: The specific style and size of the
letters.
·
Background: The elements that are in the back.
·
Foreground: The elements that are in the front and
center.
·
Layout: The elements and structure of the visual
text, that means, what parts you can find and how they are arranged.
·
Border: The outer edge of something.
·
Frame: Also the edge of something, but in a
rectangle form surrounding something.
·
Features: The word “feature” is used to describe all
the elements you can see: The color, font, layout, symbols and concepts –
everything that is used in the visual text.
Activity:
1. What elements can you identify?
2. What can you see in the background and what
can you see in the foreground?
3. What does the font look like?
4. What colors are used? What do you think
about the colors?
